Talk N Text Superstar

One of the exciting part in PBA season opening is the parade of the team along with their muses. During the parade, you will see your favorite players wearing their new uniforms, new design for each team’s jersey, new faces in the other teams, as well as the beautiful and ravishing ladies holding the team’s banner. These ladies represent the team’s good luck charm for the opening of the new season of the PBA.

The likes of Anne Curtis, The Brazilian Girls, Iwa Moto, Ara Mina, Christine Reyes, Diana Meneses, Isabelle Daza and others who never failed to display their beauty and poise in every PBA season opener.

And this Sunday, we will witness again the team’s “good luck charms” when the PBA open its 37th season.

But all of a sudden, a tweet coming from Snow Badua, stating that the Talk N Text will parade the “Superstar” Ms. Nora Aunor as their muse.

Wait a minute!!!

Nora Aunor as TNT’s muse? Well, I’m not a Vilmanian or Sharonian and definitely not a Noranian, but please… this is Philippine Basketball! This is not the proper venue to stage the comeback of Ms. Aunor in showbiz.

They said that it’s MVP’s choice of having the Superstar as their muse, but Mr. MVP, you can guest the Superstar in Willie Revillame’s show anytime of the day for the promotion of her new show in TV5.

Speaking of muse, I would like to congratulate Powerade Tigers for bringing back the glory in selecting their team’s muse, from Pokwang to Vice Ganda and now Ms. Maricar Reyes.

Now I wonder, will Boy Abunda take a leave of absence in “The Buzz” to show support for his idol? Will Kuya Germs be the one hosting the opening ceremonies? Or the Tuesday Group of That’s Entertainment will provide the intermission number?

Welcome Back Ate Guy!

READY TO RUMBLE: BGK VS. ROS PRIMER

This Sunday, the PBA will open its 37th season with a full blast. Armed with 10 teams with very competitive lineups, the hopes are high to get the coveted All Filipino title this conference.

To begin with, Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings will face the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters as the lone season opening game. What are the chances of both teams?

Evaluating the roster

For the BGK, again they will parade their “security agency” leading by Helterbrand, Cortez, Caguioa, Labagala, and Aquino. The rookie Riel Cervantes will be tested this game as their team is in need with inside presence with the departure (or should I say abandonment) of Rudy Hatfield. With Eric Menk is out with injury and Enrico Villanueva is still in the process of healing on his previous injury, Yancy de Ocampo and Billy Mamaril will man the paint. On the defensive side, Ronald Tubid and The Wilsons (John and Willy) will take over.

On the ROS camp, expect their prized rookie Paul Lee will show his skills in this opening game. After defeating the Talk N Text in their pre-season game, expect a revitalized Rain or Shine this conference. With their talented roster: Gabe Norwood, Ronjay Buenafe, TY Tang, the Extra Rice tandem of JR Quinahan and Beau Belga, Jervy Cruz and defensive stoppers Larry Rodriguez and Ronnie Matias, this is a cohesive lineup for coach Yeng Guiao.

Game face

For BGK, this will be the last conference for Jayjay Helterbrand. Mark Caguioa must prove himself this conference to get the coveted MVP title that always been avoiding him through out his entire career (thanks to the media - Caguioa).

For ROS, no one can stop them in their quest for their first championship. Yeng Guiao and his troops showed last season that this team is on a serious mission. Paul Lee is a very strong candidate for the Rookie of the Year.

Prediction

Don’t worry BGK fans if SMC didn’t do anything in order to beef up the team’s front line for they don’t rely too much on their bigs when they anchored their high octane offense. On the defensive side, expect the Wilsons to do their jobs and leave Ronald Tubid’s acting workshop every game. And if he will display his “acting prowess” this Sunday, Yeng Guiao will serve as his “hurado” and will give his “Vice Ganda comments” during the game.

If the game is a close one, BGK will win it.

PBA - RP Team in 2013

It’s been a week after the FIBA-Asia had ended, but the preparation for the next FIBA Asia qualifier is now getting attention on every corner of Philippine basketball world.
We already heard MVP that he will continue supporting the National Team even if it takes forever. We also heard that PBA is open to help the SBP in its quest for another run just to qualify for the next Olympics in 2014.

But yesterday, in the AKTV website, an article posted there that PBA will lend 16 players for the RP National Team for the FIBA championship. In this very moment that the Smart Gilas earned 4th place finish in the recent FIBA in Wuhan, Commissioner Salud is now open to lend his 16 players for the next FIBA qualifier. Why Mr. Salud? After you dumped the request of Toroman to borrow some of your players (except MVP teams) to play for the flag, you are now willing to lend 16 players?

One of the factors (I think) that Salud agreed to have a 16 man pool for the RP team in 2013 is because he wants to prove that PBA players is a lot capable of earning a spot for the 2014 Olympics, that he can surpass what Smart Gilas achieved in the last 3 years.

However, I’m still not in favor of creating an all PBA RP team because of the following reasons: 1. Because of the three conference format in the PBA right now, the training of the players might be affected because of the rigid schedule of the PBA; 2. I think some of our players who might be chosen to represent the country won’t “play their best” because of some injuries they might experience in the long run and their “fat contract” will be at stake; 3. If this will be a all PBA RP Team, what will happen to the system installed by Toroman to the old Gilas team? For sure they will go back to zero again, chemistry and familiarity will suffer and the worst, Toroman won’t be their coach anymore; and lastly, how will the team owners react when their star players will be loaned to the RP Team?

It is ok for the PBA to help the National Team for its bid to qualify for the 2014 Olympics, but an all PBA team is a no-no for this time. We have already seen the improvement of our Gilas core in Wuhan. The only thing that the PBA will do is to “fix” the flaw in the system and not to ruin it.

I believe that the best formula for the 2013 FIBA Asia is: Old Gilas Core + PBA players + Amateur players + Douthit. Simple formula to success.

Thoughts on San Miguel Beermen in ABL

San Miguel Beermen is one of the pillars of Philippine Basketball Association by bringing in 19 championships, represented the Philippine Team in 1994 Asian Games and the longest staying team in the league (or should I say one of the original teams)

With the announcement last July of this year, the SMB team will participate in ASEAN Basketball League. ABL is a professional basketball league where it composes of several Asian teams like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and even Philippines with Philippine Patriots.
According to Mr. Noli Eala, one of the SMC’s basketball operations director, the team will be handled by the legendary Bobby Parks. Parks, the only seven-time Best Import Awardee in the PBA and one of the assistant coaches of Petron Blaze Boosters (formerly San Miguel Beermen).

While the start of the ABL will be on January of next year (2012), SMB is very busy completing their lineup for the league. According to some sources, Junmar Fajardo, Chris Banchero, Junjun Cabatu, Benedict Fernandez and Marc Andaya (I’m not so sure) will be in the lineup for SMB (with two imports of course, Richard Jeter is the one).

For me, the move by SMC to have a team in ABL is one of marketing strategy. They want (SMC products) be known in the Asian market. Again, the magic of Mr. Eala regarding this move is magnificent. And I’m pretty sure that SMB will be competitive team in ABL.

With their present yet incomplete line-up of SMB, Junmar Fajardo will be the next big thing in Philippine Basketball. Mentored by the famous Don Ramon Fernandez, in a year or two The Kraken Fajardo will be a force to reckon in the professional league (hello PBA 2012 Draft - Petron Blaze Boosters). Chris Banchero is also one of the players eyed by Toroman to join the Smart Gilas, but because of injury, he was unable to represent the country in Wuhan.

These two players will be the corner stone of SMB in ABL. And I’m sure that the winning tradition of SMB will continue in ABL as what they did to PBA.

Goodluck Beermen!

Candidates for the Gilas 2.0 Head Coach

The Smart Gilas project is over (maybe on player’s contract) and the stint of coach Rajko Toroman is still uncertain whether he wants to come back for another quest for FIBA Asian Qualifier this 2013 or accept offers from another national teams (I hope he may not).
There are some names floating around the basketball community to replace the Serbian coach, Chot Reyes of Talk N Text Tropang Texters, Norman Black of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Jong Uichico of Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings and Yeng Guiao of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are one of the most sought after coaches that can replace Toroman for the Gilas 2.0.

All the names mentioned above have already experienced handling national team in the recent years. Black handled the 1994 RP National Team which mostly composed of San Miguel Beermen who won the All Filipino title against Coney Island Ice Cream Stars, with amateurs then Marlou Aquino and Kenneth Duremdes, with Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera and Rey Evangelista, in 1994 earning fourth place. Reyes handled the 2007 RP National Team which composed of PBA All-Stars and some collegiate standouts. He led the team to a 9th place finish in FIBA Asia Championship Cup, third place in William Jones Cup, and a title in the Brunei Cup. Originally handpicked by Ron Jacobs, Uichico handled the 2002 RP National Team after he (Jacobs) suffered a stroke. He guided the team to a fourth place finish after Lee Sang Min’s three point shot ended our hope for a possible silver medal. Guiao handled the 2009 RP National Team with the ultimate goal of competing for the World Basketball Championship in Turkey but failed to live up the expectations.

With an impressive resume regarding the experience in international tournaments, I might say that Chot Reyes is the best candidate for the Gilas 2.0 if Toroman won’t return at all. He is the only Filipino member of the US Basketball Academy. In terms of preparations, dedication and being one of the assistant to Toroman in Wuhan, he is more credible replacement for the Serbian coach. The only hindrance is his stint with the Talk N Text Tropang Texters in the PBA.

My second choice is Yeng Guiao. He may not be the greatest X’s and O’s type of a coach, but his passion cannot be questioned by others. He may be fierce to his players, one of the best characteristics of Guiao as a coach is his “eye for the talent”. I believed that his 2009 RP Team is one of the best line up ever assembled compare to the previous lineups handled by three coaches(and if only Marcus Douthit is naturalized during that time). He is also one of the best in terms of player rotation, which is one of the flaws on Toroman’s system in Wuhan.

Maybe in 2013, Reyes and Guiao will handle the Gilas 2.0. And I don’t think it’s a good idea as far as pride is concern. But who knows?

The Future of our National Team

After the FIBA-Asia where the Smart Gilas National Team finished fourth, a lot of speculations circulating in the Philippine Basketball Community whether if our quest for the Olympics is over, if Coach Rajko Toroman will return for another stint with the team or will the PBA create a new set of delegations for the 2013 FIBA-Asia.

First and foremost, Manny V. Pangilinan stated in his interview that he and the SBP will continue the program whether it will be on 2013, 2015 or it takes forever t qualify for the Olympics. However, the status of Toroman is still uncertain.

The latest buzz is if Toroman won’t be renewing his contract with Gilas and leave the team, either assistants Chot Reyes or Norman Black will handle the team because of their familiarity with Toroman’s system. But the stronger candidate is Black in which he also handles the RP Team in 2011 SEAG.

Also, the PBA expressed their intentions to help by representing the National Team in international tournaments and very willing to cooperate with the SBP to make things happen.

In my point of view, PBA can be a great help for the National Team but they must limit their involvement for it may disrupt the chemistry and familiarity of the former core of Gilas. And if ever they must not replace Toroman. He successfully brought back the Philippines to the basketball map in Asia and the program must continue in the 2013 FIBA qualifier.

Marcus Douthit maybe 33 or 34 years old during the FIBA qualifier, but he can still be a force to reckon, but he must limit himself to some games to avoid serious injuries. And the idea of having Fajardo, Slaughter, Aguilar and Chiu in the team will help Douthit to lessen some scoring loads in his shoulders.

The idea of having a tall point guard must be the focus right now. JV Casio and Jimmy Alapag are great point guard but they are small compare to other PGs in Asia. Having a 6-5 PG in the mold of Gabe Norwood or Ray-Ray Parks is a good improvement for the team.

To sum it up, I’m against on creating an All PBA Team for the 2013 FIBA Asian qualifier. They can add players to the old Smart Gilas core in order to improve their lineup. They must also retain Toroman for the furnishing of the system, but if he won’t be returning for good, Norman Black can take over. Adding a pure shooter on the team will be a great help (James Yap or Dondon Hontiveros).

Team Pilipinas: Moving on to the next level

The FIBA-Asia has ended. China already gained a spot for the London Olympics, while Jordan and Korea will move to the next wild card phase round to face the other teams from Europe and America. The Smart Gilas earned fourth place and it is one of the best finishes made by our National Team for years.

So, what is the next move of the SBP? The best thing is to move on to the next level.
The system of Coach Rajko Toroman is one of the best systems ever applied to a National Team (but still I would prefer the style of Jaworksi when he handled the 1990 RP Team) but as we observed in the recent tournament, the rotation of the players is very predictable for the opposing team. Obviously, Marcus Douthit will be the center of our offense, and other than him, only Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams is capable of scoring for the team. Lutz and Lassiter is the main defensive weapon of the team and scoring for the team is their second priority. Asi Taulava is not the Asi we used to see in the past international scene, maybe old age is catching him up. Japeth Aguilar is not a major factor for the team because Rajko won’t allow him to play especially in close games. And one of the major problems for the team is the lack of shooter (opposing teams might be thankful because Allan Caidic is already retired).

Now what will be the next step for the National Team? The next FIBA-Asia is on 2013, and we still have 3 more years to prepare for the next battle. Here are some key points to consider in building up the next National Team:

1. Search for another “Marcus Douthit”

By 2013, Marcus will be 33 years old. He might be slow down by injuries and old age might catch him up. It’s better for us to find a replacement in the age bracket of 23 – 27 years old.

2. Proper training for our “BIGS”

We have Junmar Fajardo, Gian Chiu, Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar as our big men to be inserted in the new NT lineup. Proper training will be a good move for them and we will be able to match the “towers” of other teams.

3. Good selection of players

I admire the inclusion of Lutz and Lassiter in the Gilas team because they provide the intense defensive attacks to the other teams. I hope in the next lineup Lutz and Lassiter might be included again.

Other notable names for the next NT are Kiefer Ravena (much improved version of Chris Tiu), Ray Parks,Calvin Abueva, Aldrech Ramos, Fil-Ams Stanley Pringle (very versatile player), Chris Banchero, Keith Jansen and Stanhardinger (6-8 Fil-German).

in 2013, the hopes are high again and the support for the NT will keep on flowing.

Mabuhay ang Team Pilipinas!

Thank you SMART GILAS!

Once and for all, I would like to congratulate Smart Gilas for being the Top 4 teams in the FIBA-Asia. Although they lost a potential silver medal against Jordan, still I am very proud of the accomplishments of Coach Rajko Toroman and the Gilas boys.

I remembered the last time when they formed the Smart Gilas, I was so disappointed on the selection of the players for the team. Some Fil-Ams were included in the line-up like Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter, which for me is still unknown players then (maybe because I’m not interested to look for their stats and Lutz and Lassiter even played more heart than other players requested to play for the team), another thing is the naturalization of Marcus Douthit. For me, it’s an insult to naturalize a player from another country in which we have Junmar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter to fill Marcus’ shoes. (But the way Marcus played this FIBA Asia, he is a Filipino at heart)

But it’s all easier said than done…

Coach Rajko said to conquer their goal “London 2012”, their current line-up which composed of several amateur players like Casio, Tiu, Baracael, Barocca, Ababou and Ballesteros is not enough to realize their goal. That’s why he asked the PBA and PBA teams to lend their players to play for the team. However, only MVP teams cooperate and actually lend their players for the Gilas team (I salute Jimmy Alapag, Ranidel de Ocampo, Kelly Williams and Asi Taulava). Also, he asked Junmar Fajardo and other collegiate players to play for the team, but UAAP and NCAA won’t allow their players because the collegiate championship is more prioritized than playing for the flag.

In the current FIBA-Asia, we actually saw our national team played their hearts out in order to conquer their goal. Although the height advantage is very evident during games, the players never… as in never backed down against giant teams in Asia.

Now, if we able to snatch a win against Korea, there is a very slim chance to qualify for the London Olympics, in which we will face other teams from Europe and America in the wild card phase for the remaining slots for the Olympics.

To those critics who said that Gilas project is a failure, think again twice. From rank number 9, we climb up to rank number 4. This is considered as an accomplishment for the team already. We all know all project has its flaws but we can fixed that flaw in the future. So please stop blaming the Gilas team for they didn’t match their expectations. If we feel sorry for the lost, how much worse they’re feeling right now?

Thank you again Smart Gilas for bringing back the basketball glory in our country.

Let’s hope that the next Gilas team will be as formidable as the current team today.

Let us support the Philippine basketball!

JAPETH AGUILAR: THE TALL ORDER

If you have a 6’ 9” height, with exceptional athletic talent and experience playing in NCAA Division 1 in college, expect that PBA Teams will sign you just name your price or you will be given a slot on our national team.

That is JAPETH AGUILAR.

From his college years with Ateneo to NCAA Division 1 experience to being the Number 1 Draft pick in 2009 and a Smart Gilas mainstay, his resume is very impressive. But the question is, “Is he (Japeth) the next big thing in Philippine Basketball?”

Gone are the days of a physically gifted big man landed in the PBA with the likes of Ramon Fernandez, Abet Guidaben and Benjie Paras. I will not mention the coming of EJ Feihl, Cris Bolado, Yancy de Ocampo and even Samigue Eman. But when Japeth applied for the 2009 PBA Draft, we see a bright future ahead of him and being picked by the Burger King under Coach Yeng Guiao as the first overall pick. But after that, wind of change cam to his mind and announcing that he will play for the flag, and not for the PBA. A lot of critics blame him because if he wanted to play for the country, why did he apply for the draft? But after being feared of facing a lifetime ban in the PBA, a trade was consummated to transfer Japeth to Talk N Text for some bag of Nips.

The trade allowed him to play for the NT. And we saw what Japeth can bring to the team. He even explode for 21 points and 15 rebounds in 15 minutes against the Syria, but unable to strut his stuff against the powerhouse team China.

Doubters claim that even Japeth has the height of a giant and can put up super dunks and alley-ops; still he is a defensive liability to the team. But if you will observe how Japeth plays inside the court, you will notice the following: Poor dribbling skills, doesn’t have the post up moves, inconsistent from mid-range and beyond and poor body frame to push off bigger and stronger player inside the paint. Those skills are very important especially if you will be the starting center of any PBA or NT.

But still, Japeth has yet to experience the PBA brand of game this season. His experience in the FIBA Asia will help him to be one of the top centers to play in the PBA.

What is the tall order for Japeth? Another run of grandslam for the Talk N Text this season…

The Fortune of Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings

The whole baranggay in the archipelago awaits for the return of their favorite Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings this October 2, 2011 as an opening game versus the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters for the 37th season of the PBA.

But let us evaluate their performance last season and their preparation this opening season...

Last season, BGK entered the finals against the Talk N Text Tropang Texters in the Commissioner's Cup Finals. Because of the over-whelming power of the Tropang Texters inside the paint and outside the arc, BGK cannot find an antidote to the poison given to them and gave the Tropang Texter their second championship in the season.

In the Governor's Cup, teams where stacked in the upper part of the standings. And because of the "quotient-system", BGK must defeat their opponent as well as TNT must defeat Petron Blaze Boosters in order to set their second face-off in the finals. Even BGK won the game, TNT lose to Petron by a large margin, and kiss their hopes goodbye for another showdown against the TNT.

Now in the off-season, BGK drafted Reil Cervantes in the first round, and James Martinez (they gave to Powerade) in the second round in the recently concluded PBA Draft 2011.

With Siot Tanquincen taking over the coaching chores from Jong Uichico, BGK faced another problem regarding in their line up. Rudy "The H-Bomb" Hatfield wont return to their line up for good and Jayjay Helterbrand is contemplating for retirement.

What will be the fortune of BGK this coming season? Is there any player movements in order to shaken up their roster and improve it like what SMC did to Petron Blaze Boosters and BMEG Llamados, their sister teams.

Will Siot bring back the winning glory of the team?

I hope that BGK will, again, rule the PBA this coming season!

Team Pilipinas - PBA Version

While the PBA is on vacation, the hottest basketball game today is the FIBA- Asia, where our very own Smart – Gilas is on a roll to victory after defeating the power-house teams of Japan, Jordan and Syria. Failed to win against China, our goal to qualify for the next round is still possible. With Marcus Douthit and the rest of the Gilas team, we are assured that they are one of the best National Team ever assembled.

But wait, long before the Smart Gilas was formed, the PBA is also responsible for sending our players to the international basketball scene. I think the last PBA-RP team pool was headed by Coach Yeng Guiao.

Now, what if the PBA is asked to form a separate RP team? How will the selection be made? Who will handle the team?

If I will be given the chance to select the PBA RP-Team today, here is my list:

1. I will create a 14 man team, including one naturalized player.
2. I will not include players in the current roster in the Gilas team since it is a separate team.
3. The line-up will be composed of 3 Centers, 4 Forwards, 4 Shooting Guards and 3 Point Guards.
4. I will select Chris Alexander as our naturalized player.
5. For the Center Slot, I will select Sonny Thoss of Alaska, Noy Baclao of Petron and Alexander.
6. For the Forward Slot, I will select Arwind Santos of Petron, Sean Anthony of Powerade, Marc Pingris of BMEG and Harvey Carey of Talk N Text.
7. For the Shooting Guard Slot, I will select James Yap of BMEG, Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, Cyrus Baguio of Alaska and Gary David of Powerade.
8. For the Point Guard Slot, I will select Jason Castro and Ryan Reyes of Talk N Text and Sol Mercado of Meralco.

My Starting Five:

C - Chris Alexander
PF – Arwind Santos
SF – Sean Anthony
SG – James Yap
PG – Jason Castro

This is a fast and defense-oriented line-up. We must admit that our team is very small compared to China and other countries, that’s why I chose Chris Alexander to reinforce the team.

I think this is the best RP Team selection that the PBA has to offer where the defense is the main ingredient of the team.

Finally, The ROCK has come back...

Still in the state of shock. WWE Just Bring it!

The Rejuvenated Powerade Tigers

Can Powerade Tigers compete this PBA 37th season?

After a disappointing campaign of the Powerade Tigers last season, the team’s outlook for this season is very positive. Why? Because of the major overhaul in their line-up in the recent PBA 2011 Draft and the off-season camp, they acquired several players to bolster their lineup and bring back the winning tradition of this team.

Let’s check out their projected first-five in the Philippine Cup

JV CASIO (POINT GUARD)

The first pick overall in the recent PBA Draft. He is one of the mainstay of the Smart-Gilas National Team. He averaged 14.11 PPG and 5.22 APG when Gilas joined the PBA in the Commissioner’s Cup.

What he can bring to the team?

With his experience in the international brand of play, he can create plays for his teammates. He can also score whenever he likes and can play tough defense.

GARY DAVID (SHOOTING GUARD)

What else we can say to Mr. Pure Energy? He is the main scorer of the team in the last season, and lead the league in points. And now surrounding with young and prolific players, he can now unload some of his scoring duties to his teammates.

What he can bring to the team?

His scoring prowess.

MARCIO LASSITER (SMALL FORWARD)

With an impressive record playing basketball abroad, this rookie Fil-Am is also a very good player. A Smart Gilas mainstay who averaged 13.6 PPG during his stint in the PBA. Drafted by the Tigers in the first round, 4th-overall, this sweet-shooting Cio can deliver anytime and every time in the court.

What he can bring to the team?

His over-all efficiency and his 39.6% 3 point field goal percentage. He is also a hard-nose defender.

SEAN ANTHONY (POWER FORWARD)

Defense win games! That’s the basketball philosophy of Sean Anthony. He is considered as the upgrade of Freddie Abuda in terms of hustle and defense. This season, he will again rise to the occasion and as the Rock says, “Just Bring it on Sean Anthony.

What he can bring to the team?

D-E-F-E-N-S-E!

DOUR KRAMER (CENTER)

His game can be compared to Kevin Love of the Timberwolves. Already in his fourth team in the PBA (also in his 4th year in the league), he is now the team’s enforcer in the paint. Armed with rebounding skills and a body that can bang and force his way to the paint, expect Kramer to elevate his game more on his new team and be the cornerstone.

The supporting casts:

Celino Cruz
Alex Crisano
Francis Allera
Josh Vandalingham
Ricky Calimag
Will Antonio
Rommel Adducul

With their own version of “FAST FIVE” and with veteran support from the bench, I will expect the Tigers to enter the quarterfinals two of the three conferences.

Alvin Patrimonio vs. Ramon Fernandez: Which Legendary PBA MVP was Greater?

These two PBA Legends, both 4-time MVP awardees and champions in their respective ball clubs, took the PBA into greater heights.

We experienced the most explosive actions in the hard court whenever they played. The question is, who was the better?

Let us dissect each of the category where we can decide who was the greatest 4-time PBA MVP.

What's the Greatest Part of Patrimonio's Game?

I think the greatest part of Patrimonio’s game is his physical dominance inside the paint. Despite of being 6’ 3” in height, to small for his power forward position, he muscled his way among the giants and imports whom he encountered every game. He even had a career high in field goal percentage of .622 in the year 1990. Once in the paint, the best opportunity to prevent him from scoring is to foul him.

What's the Greatest Part of Fernandez's Game?

For me, the greatest part of Don Ramon’s game is his flexibility and finesse. He is one of the players I’ve known who can play multiple positions. He is very known of his dribbling skills, uncanny passing ability which is very rare to a 6’ 5’’ player who in his time is considered as for Center position. He even averaged in nearly triple double in his career.

Who would win in a One-on-One Matchup of Patrimonio vs. Fernandez in their primes?

I think if both of them face-to-face in their early twenty’s, Don Ramon will prevail against the Captain. Statistically wise, Don Ramon’s average of 27 PPG, 15 RPG and 9.9 APG will dominate Alvin every game. However, Alvin will use his thick frame in order to muscle out Ramon’s thin body, but Ramon can play defense too.

Who Is a Better Building Block to Start a Franchise?

Honestly, it’s nearly impossible to go wrong with either Patrimonio or Fernandez as a franchise building block.

Offensively, Patrimonio is one of the best scoring power forward in the game. He even mastered the 3 point shot in the later part of his career. On the other hand, if we will use the word versatility, Fernandez is a perfect player to start with a franchise. Capable of playing in every position, and the experience of playing with other team is one of the strong point being as the franchise player himself.

Best and Worst Team Decisions in PBA History

Here are the lists of some worst decisions ever made by some PBA Teams in NO particular order.

1. ALASKA ACES

BEST:

Acquiring talents through trades (Lastimosa – Cabahug, Cariaso – Solomon, Devance-Mercado, etc.)

Following the salary cap in a very efficient manner.

Signing of Tim Cone in 1989.

Lending the Big Three for the National Team, inspite of eyeing a second grandslam in 1998.

WORST:

Trading Kenneth Duremdes to Sta. Lucia for Brandon Cablay

Trading Johnny Abarrientos and Poch Juinio to Coca-Cola Tigers for Ali Peek and Jon Ordonio

Letting go of Tim Cone (although Tim asked for his release but I know that there’s something else in between)

2. BARAKO BULL (formerly Air21)

BEST:

Drafting the best talents in every PBA draft (I might also include this to the worst decision)

Introducing Shawn Daniels in the PBA (one of the best import played here in the league)

WORST:

Drafting the best talents in every PBA draft and trading it after for some bags of peanuts.

Considered as the farm team of SMC and MVP teams
3. BARANGAY GINEBRA GIN KINGS

BEST:

Drafting Mark Caguioa in the 2001 PBA Draft and signing the free-agent Jayjay Helterbrand.

Acquiring Rudy Hatfield, Billy Mamaril and Rafi Reavis from Coca-Cola

Signing the free agent then, Bal David, in 1996.

WORST:

Forming a line-up of “security guards”.

Letting Rudy Hatfield to come and go for the team (whenever he likes to play ball)

Allan Caidic as coach (which lead to Sonny Jaworski leaving the team in 1998)

Drafting EJ Feihl, even Duremdes and Cariaso is still available in the 1995 PBA Draft.

Their famous “walk-out” versus Shell in 1990.

4. BMEG Llamados

BEST:

Of course, signing Tim Cone as coach.

Elevating Jojo Lastimosa, Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera and other players to form the Purefoods team in 1988.

Hiring Baby Dalupan (the winningest coach in the PBA) as their coach.

Matching the offer of Pepsi Mega in 1991 on Alvin Patrimonio for 25 million 5-year contract.

Drafting James Yap in 2005 PBA Draft.

WORST:

Trading Marc Pingris to San Miguel in 2008 for Enrico Villanueva.

Trading Jerry Codinera to Mobiline in 1999 for Andy Seigle.

Hiring the “Fil-Sham” Al Segova.

5. MERALCO BOLTS

BEST:

Buying the Sta. Lucia franchise

Acquiring talents like Asi Taulava, Marc Cardona and Sol Mercado.

WORST:

Offering a one conference contract to Marlou Aquino.

Using the name “Meralco” even the charges in our electricity is very high.

6. PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS

BEST:

Signing Danny Seigle as “direct-hire” in 1999.

Signing the free agent, Olsen Racela, in 1997.

Drafting Danny Ildefonso during the 1998 PBA Draft.

WORST:

Trading LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier to Alaska in exchange of Mike Cortez and Ken Bono.

Acquiring talents in Air 21 (or should I say “hoarding”)

Draft boo-boos by Jong Uichico during his stint with the team.

Drafting Sam Eman, when Ryan Reyes is still available.

Trading Seigle, Pena, Hontiveros and Artadi to Air 21

Using the name “Petron” even there’s always an oil price hike (and to stop Phoenix from entering the league).

7. POWERADE TIGERS

BEST:

Drafting JV Casio and Marcio Lassiter in the 2011 PBA Draft.

Acquiring Gary David from Air21 for Alex Cabagnot.

Acquiring Doug Kramer and Josh Vandalingham from Rain or Shine.

WORST:

Not replacing their coach Bo Perasol.

Acquiring old players through trade.

Letting Kenneth Duremdes play again this season.

8. RAIN ELASTO PAINTERS

BEST:

Drafting Paul Lee in the 2011 PBA Draft.

Drafting Gabe Norwood in the 2008 PBA Draft.

Signing Yeng Guiao as head coach.

WORST:

I can’t remember any…

9. TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS

BEST:

Signing Asi Taulava as “direct-hire” in 1999.

Good draft choices like Jimmy Alapag (2003), Harvey Carey (2003), Jason Castro (2008)

Lending players for the national team.

WORST:

Trading Asi Taulava (thanks to Derek Pumaren)
“Choosing” Petron Blaze Boosters to end their “grand slam” bid.

Allowing Jason Castro to play even he is injured.

And allowing Chot Reyes to “air” his drama about his team.

Best Offensive Duos in the PBA

1. LA Tenorio (13.48 PPG) and Cyrus Baguio (12.42 PPG)
2. James Yap (18.75 PPG) and Joe Devance (16.48 PPG)
3. Danny Seigle (12.10 PPG) and Willie Miller (10.94 PPG)
4. Mark Caguioa (16.00 PPG) and Ronald Tubic (10.45 PPG)
5. Sol Mercado ( 17.69 PPG) and Mark Cardona (18.67 PPG)
6. Arwind Santos (15.29 PPG) and Jay Washington (15.94 PPG)
7. Gary David (21.79 PPG) and Sean Anthony (7.57 PPG)
8. Gabe Norwood (10.28 PPG) and Ronjay Buenafe (12.43 PPG)
9. Jimmy Alapag (12.43 PPG) and Jason Castro (11.87 PPG)

I didn’t include the Shopinas Clickers because their line up is not yet finalize and I don’t think that they have an offensive duo to look at.

Based on the list, the duo of Cardona and Mercado has the best combined average points close to 37 PPG, while the duo of Seigle/Miller and Norwood/Buenafe has the lowest at 23 PPG. On the other hand, the highest points average is Gary David with 21.79 PPG and his partner (not in scoring, but I have to include Anthony to justify my article) averaged 7.57 PPG which is the lowest.

Top 5 PBA 37th Season MVP Contenders

Last season, Jimmy Alapag bagged the 2010 PBA Most Valuable Player. He is the latest point guard who won the MVP plum since Jayjay Helterbrand in 2009.

With the opening of the 37th season of the PBA this October 2, all eyes are set to those players who will compete for the coveted award this 2011 and became on of the elite list of MVPs in the PBA history.

#5 Jason Castro (Talk N Text)

2010 Conference Ave: 11.87 PPG, 3.85 RPG, 4.11 APG

Some says that “The Blur” is the “other MVP” aside Jimmy Alapag. He is a two-time PBA Finals MVP in 2010, and possibly a grand slam winner of the Finals MVP if TNT beat the Petron Blazers in the Governor’s cup. He is a type of a player that “plays with heart and courage” every game.

#4 James Yap (BMEG)

2010 Conference Ave: 18.75 PPG, 4.30 RPG, 1.77 APG

“King James”, a two-time MVP, is seeking revenge for his team after the not so good performance of his team during the 36th season. The team is plagued with injuries, he still carried his team to the top of the standings but he cannot sustain it alone. With the entry of Tim Cone, expect James Yap to elevate his game and become the catalyst of the triangle offense.

#3 Solomon Mercado (Meralco)

2010 Conference Ave: 17.69 PPG, 4.97 RPG, 4.83 APG

“The Soul Train”’s campaign last season didn’t lived up to expectations, as their team is always at the bottom half of the standings. Expect Sol Mercado to lead the charge for the Meralco Bolts this season.

#2 Joe Devance (BMEG)

2010 Conference Ave: 16.48 PPG, 8.43 RPG, 3.55 APG

JDV’s transfer from Alaska to BMEG Llamados last season is one of the breaking news in the PBA. But, teaming up again with Tim Cone and his familiarity with the triangle system, JDV will again rule the every statistical category to win the MVP this season.

#1 Arwind Santos (Petron)

2010 Conference Ave: 15.29 PPG, 10.68 RPG, 1.25 BPG

The 2010 Governor’s Cup Best Player of the Conference, Finals MVP and Champion, “Spiderman” will be a force to reckon this season. After being “robbed” with the MVP last season (Thanks to the media votes), expect Arwind to dominate every conference this coming season.

Ranking the last 11 Rookies of the Year Award – Winners

This 37th season, all eyes are on the rookies who were drafted last August 28, 2011 in the PBA 2011 Draft. With the SMART Gilas players like JVee Casio, Chris Lutz, Marcio Lassiter, Mac Baracael, Marc Barocca, Dylan Ababou and UE’s Paul Lee, they will banner their mother team and help to carry them into the Finals.
Let us rank the last 11 Winners of the PBA Rookie of the Year.

#11 – Davon Harp (2000 – Red Bull)
Where is he? Ah ok, next please…

#10 – Rich Alvarez (2004 - Shell)
Entering his 7th year in the PBA, he is considered as journeyman already, nearing the list of draft disappointments, he played for various teams from Shell to Alaska to Red Bull to Purefoods to Barangay Ginebra to Air21 up to his present team, Talk N Text Texters. His credentials while playing in the UAAP, with 2 MVPs, but here in the PBA, this is his only award that he can boast for.

#9 – Renren Ritualo (2002 – Air21)
Known as “The Rainman” in the UAAP playing for the La Salle Green Archers, he steered his team to championships. Drafter by Air21, this sweet-shooting Ritualo played a vital role for the team, aside from winning the ROY, he is also the 2002 Sixth Man of the Year by the PBA Press Corp. Unluckily, he was drafted by Air21, he is traded to Talk N Text, then to Coca Cola Tigers/Powerade, got cut and found his way to Shopinas Clickers and coach Franz Pumaren.

#8 – Rico Maeirhofer (2009 - Purefoods)
A De La Salle standout before going into the PBA, he was drafted behind the controversial Jappeth Aguilar by the Burger King. Became a corner-stone of the Purefoods during their campaign in the 2009 season. Because of numerous injuries, Rico immediately powered his way onto the starting line up and helped his team to capture the Philippine Cup versus Alaska Aces via sweep. Best remembered when he was posterized by Danny Seigle’s powerhouse dunk.

#7 – Rabeh Al-Husseini (2010 – Air21)
He is extRABEHgant! He was picked second overall behind his fellow Eagle Noy Baclao in the 2010 PBA Draft. Criticized by his future mentor before the draft, he immediately muscled his way down to PBA stardom. One of the players involved in the shocking trade between Air21 and San Miguel Beermen, he wasted no time by delivering goods for the team. His strong showing in the Governor’s Cup is a sign that he is already one of the reliables in the lineup. Got injured in the last phase of the elimination, but boasted a double digit average points every game.

#6 – Gabe Norwood (2008 – Rain or Shine)
One of the 3 first pick overall to win the ROY award, “The President” is also a two time national team member. Entering his 4th year in the PBA, he already accomplished what a future star has to offer, a Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, 2 time PBA All Star, and 2009 PBA Slam Dunk Champion. A very versatile player who can play multiple positions and seeking his first PBA championship in this season opening.

#5 – Ryan Reyes (2007 – Sta. Lucia)
Drafted behind Joe Devance (Welcoat) and Sam Eman (Magnolia), Reyes was one of the few point guards applied for the 2007 PBA Draft. Winning the 2008 ROY award, he was also the first rookie player to play for the 2008 PBA – All-Star Game and lead his team to Philippine Cup Championship. In 2010, he was traded to Talk N Text, alongside with Kelly Williams to be part of the National Team training pool.

#4 – Larry Fonacier (2005 – Red Bull)
The lone second round pick draftee in the list, “The Baby Face Assassin” became an integral part of the Red Bull team during his rookie year. Some says the reason why he was drafted in the 2nd round, team coaches doubted that his career might be over due to ACL injury he sustained in 2004. But he proved his haters wrong and Yeng Guiao gave his support to this player. Now playing for his 4th team, Talk N Text Tropang Texters.

#3 – Kelly Williams (2006 – Sta. Lucia)
“The Machine Gun”. During his rookie season, he averaged 18.3 PPG and 9.6 RPG, close to a double-double average for a rookie, earning him as the 2006 PBA ROY, defeating Air21’s Arwind Santos. After a season, he was awarded as the 2007 PBA MVP by winning the Philippine Cup for the Sta. Lucia. In 2009, he suffered an illness and was out in the entire season. He is now playing for the Talk N Text Texters.

#2 – Mark Caguioa (2001 – Barangay Ginebra)
He is virtually unknown during the 2001 PBA Draft, the BGK showed no hesitation by picking him third pick overall. “The Spark” was the third player to win the PBA ROY since Dondon Ampalayo in 1986 and Marlou Aquino in 1996. He is also considered as one of the best players today without an MVP award (same sentiments for Danny Seigle). As controversial as always, Mark showed no mercy in every game he played.

#1 – Jimmy Alapag (2003 – Talk N Text)
“The Mighty Mouse” was selected 10th pick in the first round by Talk N Text, which seems to have a problem on point guard position. Teaming up with Asi Taulava, they lead the team to All-Filipino Cup Championship, earning him the ROY award. He is also the 2004-05 PBA-All Star Co-MVP, with Taulava. And in the 36th season of the PBA, he led the team to two consecutive championships in Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup and earning the 2010 PBA MVP.

Quick Note:
The last 11 Rookie of the Year awardees, 5 of them played for the Talk N Text last season.

PBA Trades that shocked the Philippine Basketball Community

PBA’s Shocking Trades
One of the most exciting season of the PBA is the off-season, because the player movements will be one of its highlight. At the same time, it can be the most disappointing one in which where your favorite team might suffer because some of it’s good players might be headed to another team, or your favorite player might wear a new jersey in the next season.
Let us revisit some trades that shock the whole Philippine basketball world and utter the words “ Hey, tell me this ain’t gonna happen…”

JERRY CODINERA – ANDY SEIGLE TRADE
It was happened during the 1999 Commissioner’s Cup , when Purefoods decided to ship the ‘Defense Minister” to Mobiline, in exchange of Andy Seigle, the 1997 PBA Rookie of the Year. After playing 12 seasons together with the Captain, Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry found a new home in Mobiline Phone Pals playing with another PBA giant, Asi Taulava. Some says that the trade is part of the rebuilding process of the Giants because of the “Fil-Am” invasion in the PBA. The management wanted to inject youth in the lineup with Seigle and their new acquisition Al Segova, who found out to be another “Fil-Sham”.

KENNETH DUREMDES – BRANDON CABLAY TRADE
This trade shocked the PBA world when it was initiated during the PBA Draft 2003. The Alaska Aces traded their scoring leader to Sta. Lucia Realtors, in exchange of their 5th over-all pick, Brandon Cablay. A virtually unknown during the draft, but he had an impressive record during his stint with Hawaii. Some insiders said that San Miguel Beermen also eyeing Cablay during the draft. With this trade, Sta. Lucia formed their Big Three with Aquino, Espino and Duremdes, while Alaska got a young and fast backcourt combination with Cablay and their first pick, Mike Cortez.

LA TENORIO/LARRY FONACIER – MIKE CORTEZ/KEN BONO TRADE
In March 2008, this trade shocked me because this Robert Non, the very famous SMC Basketball Operation head before, traded their precious point guard, LA Tenorio and sweet-shooting Larry Fonacier to Alaska in exchange of often injured Mike Cortez and extra rice specialist Ken Bono. This trade made the SMC management an idiot one because they gave away the player who will replace Olsen Racela in the future and 2005 ROY Larry Fonacier. Again, it was a magnificent move by Mr. Trillo and the Alaska management. Until this day, I really hate Mr. Robert Non for this trade.

BILLY MAMARIL/RAFI REAVIS/ RUDY HATFIELD TO GINEBRA
In the 2006 off-season, Barangay Ginebra acquired Mamaril, Reavis and the rights of Rudy Hatfield from Coca-Cola Tigers for virtually unknown players that until this time I didn’t know who are the players involved during this trade. Because of this, BGK won the Philippine Cup against their sister team, San Miguel Beermen

DANNY SEIGLE/DONDON HONTIVEROS/DORIAN PENA/PAUL ARTADI – RABEH AL HUSSEINI/NOY BACLAO/REY GUEVARRA TRADE
The latest shocking trade, especially in the hearts of the SMB fans. Imagine, why will you trade the core that gave them numerous championships and their loyalty to the franchise is very evident by playing more than a decade to the franchise (except Artadi), to those top 3 rookies of the 2010 PBA Draft and yet, they are still very raw. The management said that, it’s a big part of their rebuilding mode for the franchise. And even Dondon came back to Petron after two seasons, still some of their fans find it hard to accept this trade.

And before I end this blog, one of the best shocking trades of all time in the PBA is whenever Air21 is involved. Expect it as a shocking one.

PBA Draft Disappointments

After PBA Draft event, most blog writers and sports enthusiasts always come up with their PBA Draft Winners and Losers article, in order to analyze what happened in the said event.
And also, there is always another topic a year/s after the draft, which is very interesting to read for, the draft busts.
Let us relive the all time PBA Draft Busts. Let’s start with…

The PBA Draft 2000

I can’t even imagine how weak this PBA Draft class in the year 2000. It is not the great class to open the Y2K. The first overall pick that time is Paolo Mendoza, a UP shooter, drafted by Sta. Lucia Realtors. And the rest is “forgettable” draft picks. Imagine, Marc Victoria, second pick overall? I didn’t remember that he played for Pop Cola then. And even he played, the hell we care.

Players drafted by Jong Uichico for San Miguel Beermen

We all know the love of Uichico for guards (which is evident in the lineup of Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings), he drafted Joey Mente and Jomar Tierra in 2001, Marlon Legazpi (he is not a guard) in 2003, Paolo Hubalde in 2005. And none of them live to the expectations of Uichico as the replacement to Olsen Racela. Drafting Legazpi when there’s Hugnatan and Jimmy Alapag (a very good point guard)
And drafting Paolo Hubalde when there’s Leo Najorda.

John Arigo

Dubbed as the next “Reggie Miller of the PBA”, even imitating his jersey number, Arigo was drafted by Alaska 5th overall in the PBA Draft 2001. Even he won a championship with the Aces during 2003 and became the scoring leader in Coca-Cola Tigers after he was traded back 2004 – 2009, Arigo exposed his defensive liabilities every game. I think he was too “overhyped” during the PBA Draft 2004. After being traded to Barako Bull and contract issues, he decided to call it quits and leave the PBA for good.

Rommel Adducul

Nicknamed as “The General”, during 1998, he and Danny Ildefonso were once touted as the next big thing in the PBA, but Rommel chooses the MBA to be part of the Manila Metro Stars, while Danny I chose the PBA. And the rest is history. He steered his Metro Stars team to championship, a league record, MVP (I think) but the success of Ildefonso can’t be compared to Adducul. He applied for the PBA 2003 Draft, being picked by BGK as second overall, but he is not the Rommel Adducul anymore who lead the San Sebastian to a 5-peat championship.

Yancy de Ocampo

He was picked by Air21 as the first overall pick in 2002 PBA Draft, this 6’9” player from St. Francis of Assisi was envisioned to be one of the greatest center in the PBA. He was also included in the PBL’s Top 20 Greatest Player of all time. But his career in the PBA went onto a roller coaster ride, he was dealt to Talk N Text, got back at Air 21 and shipped to Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings. He was too soft for a Center but has a good mid range jumper.

Samigue Eman

He was dubbed as “The Project” by Siot Tanquincen, but this project never made to blossom because he is not given the playing time in the deep roster of San Miguel Beermen during his stint with the team. Disappointed when he was “demoted” to the lineup, and immediately grab the offer of the Alaska Aces and relive his dreams to be a successful basketball player. But until now, this project never turn into reality.

How to improve the PBA?

The number one Asia's basketball league, the Philippine Basketball Association, will open it's 37th season this October 2, 2011. 10 teams vying for the All Filipino Conference (also known as the Philippine Cup) Championship, the most precious championship in every season.

Some other says that PBA is a dying league, PBA is boring now. The big question is how will the PBA improve their brand of basketball like in the 80's and 90's? The gate attendance during elimination suffered an all-time low, issues about salary cap for every team and lopsided trades between team made the PBA very "hot" in the eye of every critics.

So how to improve the PBA? Here are some of the possible solutions to make it more exciting to the basketball viewers:

1. More expansion teams and lower the franchise fee to accommodate new teams.

It's great to see the PBA with 12 competing teams. This will balance the team and it will give new jobs for the other players who wants to play basketball rather to rot in the bench. I would like to see the team of SM (Henry SY), Happee (Lamoiyan Company), even competing brands like Beer na Beer, Touch Mobile/Globe. This will bring back the rivalries between team (of course healthy rivalries).

2. Two conference format

For me, two conference format is much better than the three conference format. One is the Philippine Cup and the Reinforced Cup featuring unlimited height conference for the imports. This will strengthen the player's ability to guard imports standing 7 feet tall or even higher. Scrap the limited height import conference!

3. New Stadium for the PBA

The PBA Stadium. I would love if this will push through, because there is no reason for the PBA to transfer one venue to another venue because of the UAAP and NCAA or even for the concert of Justin Beiber. And it's so uncomfortable to see SMC vs. MVP teams playing in the SMART Araneta Big Dome. (Talk N Text Home Court)

4. Better website for the PBA

I don't understand why PBA officials won't provide the league with a better website? As a PBA fan, i would love to visit PEX and other PBA related website rather than logging in to the PBA website.

5. Trade Rules

According to alaskachampion of the PEX website, the PBA can come up with a rules regarding of the trading of players.

1. RTL tenure will be 5yrs for those with existing contract and for those with expiring contracts the tenure will only be 3yrs. It means the player cannot be traded to any team within 5yrs. It will protect the interest of the team, the player and the “identity” of the team.

For Rookies:;aside from Main Five of the team the 1st-round draftee/s that we’re signed by the team who drafted him is automatically included on the RTL for 3yrs. And the 2nd round draftees that we’re signed by the team who drafted him will be automatically included on the RTL for 2yrs.

2. Any player not included in the RTL can be traded to any team, anytime or can be listed to RTL given that the maximum number of players on the RTL (Main 5) was not met. Players after serving RTL can be traded to any team or be listed again on the RTL.

3. *Traded Players cannot be traded back to his former team or to its sister team within 3-conferences or 1-year whichever is longer. Example of Trade that will NOT be ALLOWED: Miller traded by BGK to Air21 after 1-conference stint with Air21 traded back to BGK or to Petron/BMEG.

4. 3-TEAM TRADE IS ALLOWED but NO DIRECT/INDIRECT TRADE for Sister Teams. Fake Conduism (if there’s such a word) will be avoided by the *rule “3”.

I think these points will help the league to bring back the glory, as well as their beloved PBA fans.

Top 5 Greatest Number 1 Draft Pick in the PBA

The PBA Annual Draft is one of the most exciting event in which all teams can acquire new talents from collegiate division and amateur leagues. The draft started on 1985 where the two time PABL MVP, Santiago “Sonny” Cabatu, is the top pick which is selected bt Shell.

The 1989 PBA Draft is considered as one of the richest draft pool in the PBA history, while the 2000 PBA Draft is the weakest pool ever.

Now, here is my top 5 number 1 picks in the PBA.

TOP 5:  MARLOU AQUINO

Known as ‘The Skyscraper”, he is best remembered playing under Sonny Jaworski’s Ginebra Gin Kings/Gordon Gin Boars. He was picked first overall in the 1996 draft.

In the amateur league, he was a fout-time MVP, playing for the Stag Pale Pilsen in the PBL. He was also the first Gin King since Dondon Ampalayo, to win the ROY award. Famous for his “Kili-Kili (Armpit)” or “Jolen (marble)” shot. He averaged 18.7 PPG and 9.3 RPG during his rookie year. He led the team to 1997 Commissioner’s Cup Championship against Alaska Milkmen, bannered by their import, Chris King.

But after traded to Sta. Lucia in 2000 and in 2008 by Barako Bull, Aquino showed “downfall” on his game.

TOP 4: WILLIE MILLER

Drafted in 2001 by the Red Bull team, he also played two seasons for the defunct MBA under the Nueva Ecija Patriots.

In 2002, after his rookie season, Miller won the 2002 PBA MVP, in which he is considered as the only MVP with a scoring average below 10 per game. There are some critics that Miller won the MVP because the top players in the league is very busy with the National Team training pool.

In 2004, he was traded to Talk N Text Phonepals and in 2006, he was traded again, this time to Alaska Aces. While playing for the Aces, he bagged his second MVP in 2007 and led the Aces to 2007 Fiesta Cup Championship. He is also the Finals MVP. In 2010, he was traded to Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings. And in 2011, he was traded back to Barako Bull (formerly Air 21)

TOP 3: DANNY ILDEFONSO

In 1998, he was picked by Shell in the draft, but traded to San Miguel Beermen, in exchange of the sweet shooting Noy Castillo.

A back-to-back MVP in 2000 and 2001, he led the Beermen to numerous championships from 2000 up to the present season. He also won five straight Best Player of the Conference between 2000 and 2001 season.

During the Governor’s Cup finals against the grand slam seeking, Talk N Text, he made a buzzer beater shot against Ali Peek to win Game 1 of the series.

TOP 2: ALLAN CAIDIC

The “Triggerman”, was selected by Great Taste in the 1987 PBA Draft. A very well-known player prior to the draft, the streak shooting Caidic is also a member of the NCC, the team created by Ron Jacobs for international competition.

He won the 1990 MVP and was selected by Jaworski to play for the 1990 RP team in the Asian Games. During the tourney, he and Samboy Lim were selected to Mythical First Team in the Asian Games.

He is best remembered by setting a record for point scored in one game 79 points against Ginebra San Miguel.

TOP 1: BENJIE PARAS

The “Tower of Power”, was the first pick overall by Shell during the 1989 PBA Draft. He was also the first and only (as of this time) winner of the ROY and MVP at the same time. He guided his team to numerous championships during the 1990’s. He even repeat the feat after 10 years of playing in the league, to win the PBA MVP again in 1999.

During his second MVP run, the league was “invaded” by Fil-Ams like Sonny Alvarado, Danny Seigle, Asi Taulava, Eric Menk and others, but he was not intimidated and powered his team to the 1999 All Filipino Cup Championship against the league-returning power house team, Tanduay Rhum Masters.

Remembering the 1990 RP National Team

It was 1990; I’m a third grader, with a schedule of 7:00 AM on my first subject in the morning. It’s so hard for me to get up very early in the morning because I joined my dad and uncles watching the Asian Games in PTV- 4 back then. At a very young age, I was hooked up watching my favorite players like Samboy Lim and Hector Calma playing for the National squad.

Is this the best national squad ever assembled? For me YES, because, number one, I didn’t have the opportunity to watch the Caloy Loyzaga era, which is the best era in Philippine basketball history. Secondly, this national team is the only squad (I think) that has the best record ever (in terms of rankings with other Asian Teams during that time), winning the Silver medal. And thirdly, this is the only National Team which composes of 90 percent PINOY (Jaworski (Polish) and Loyzaga (Australian citizen?), I don’t know with Paras).

Let’s take a look at their lineup:

1990 Men's Basketball Team: (Thanks to Mr. Jay P. Mercado)

Hector Calma
Ronnie Magsanoc
Samboy Lim
Allan Caidic
Yves Dignadice
Ramon Fernandez
Benjie Paras
Zaldy Realubit
Chito Loyzaga
Rey Cuenco
Dante Gonzalgo
Alvin Patrimonio

Coach: Robert Jaworski

This is a kind of line up which is loaded with offensive weapons (Lim. Caidic, Fernandez, Paras) and defensive arsenals (Loyzaga, Cuenco,Gonzalgo, Realubit). The balance in the team is very evident and they don’t need any naturalized import to play for them.

The team is relatively a small line-up, I think our Center is standing 6-6 only, but this is a fast lineup. Their speed is their main weapon, with their court generals, Hector Calma and Ronnie Magsanoc, you can never discount speed. Aside from that, we have snipers in the persons of Allan Caidic and Chito Loyzaga. And the suffocating defense that they can employ in every opposing team.

Coach Sonny Jaworski assembled the team in which every position in the line-up is capable on both offense and defense.

How I wish Sonny Jaworski is still very much involved in the PBA and Philippine Basketball, he may not be the best X’s and O’s type of coach, but he can bring out the best of every player as far as talent is concern.

PBA Team’s Best Acquisition

Good morning Sunday! Before going to my usual routine, I usually check some basketball forums and blogs to get some updates about the PBA and NBA (Hope that they end the “lockout” thing). One article that I read is all about team’s best acquisition, whether it is come from a trade or from draft picks.

Because of my love and passion for PBA, I decided to come up with my own version.

  1. Johnny Abarrientos (Alaska Aces)

He was the 3rd pick overall of the Alaska Milkmen then, a college standout from the Far Eastern University, who led the Tamaraws to two UAAP titles in 1991 and 1992. And in only his second season in the PBA, he was selected to participate in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan.

He led the Aces to eight titles, including the rare grand slam feat in 1996, at the same time winning the MVP honors in 1996.

In 1997, he was invited by the Charlotte Hornets scout Joe Bettancourt to participate in their pre-season camp. But he respectfully declined the offer, instead he focused on his career in the PBA.

He is also included in the PBA’s 25 greatest players of all time. In 2001, he was traded to the Pop Cola Panthers. And after one season playing under a new team, he lead his team to a championship against his former team, the Alaska Aces.

Accomplishments:

Most Assists ( 1994, 1995, 1996 )

  1. Arwind Santos (Barako Bull/Air21)

In the 2006 PBA Draft, Air21 selected this FEU stalwart. Already a popular player because his accomplishments during his stint to UAAP (winning the ROY in 2002), and in PBL (winning the MVP in 2004). Armed with experience and love for the game, he was selected second overall during the draft.

In his first season, he led the rookies in scoring with 14.18 PPG, and led the Express to a quarterfinal appearance against the Sta. Lucia Realtors. He was the leader of the Express in terms of scoring and rebounding. The highlight of his career in Air21 is when he led his team to the finals versus Barangay Ginebra, only to lose after the Game 7 knockout game.

He was traded to San Miguel Beermen in 2009-2010 season. With Jay Washington, they led the Beermen to some finals appearances but failed to win one for the team.

But in the recent Governor’s Cup, he carried his depleted team to the finals and bagged the championship against the seeking grand slam feat, Talk N Text.

  1. Alvin Patrimonio (Purefoods Tender Juicy/BMEG Llamados)

The Captain. His name is very synonymous to his team, the Purefood Tender Juicy Giants. He entered the league in 1988 during the third conference. He carried the team many times in the finals and winning championships. Tied with Ramon Fernandez with 4 MVP titles around his waist, he is also nicknamed the “Iron Man of the PBA” for the most number of games played consecutively (596) and one of the eight players to play at least 800 games in his career.

A many time National Team Member from 1986 to 1998. He announced his retirement in 2004 after playing 16 seasons with the franchise. He is now the team manager of BMEG Llamados.

  1. Danny Ildefonso (Petron Blaze Boosters/San Miguel Beermen)

It’s so hard to select SMB’s best acquisition because this team always find a way to acquire quality players, especially, in trade transactions. But I selected Danny Ildefonso, because one factor that he came from the draft.

This Pangasinan native is once the National University standout in the UAAP, even though his team is in the last position in team standings, he was considered a promising player in his stint with the league.

He was selected by Shell as first overall pick and immediately traded to San Miguel Beermen, who is in the rebuilding mode, in exchange with the team’s second pick, Noy Castillo.

As a rookie, he played with Nelson Asaytono, and they carried the Beermen to two runner-up finish in AFC and Commissioner’s Cup. He also won the ROY averaging close to 12 PPG.

After the departure of Asaytono, he and then rookie Fil-Am Danny Seigle, lead the team to two championships in the 1999 season and ended the five year title drought of the team.

He was a two-time MVP in 2000 and 2001 and won the Best Player of the Conference 5 straight times.

  1. Mark Caguioa (Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings)

He is unknown in the 2001 PBA Draft, he was selected 3rd overall in that draft. Raising the eyebrows of some fans, Caguioa proved them wrong by winning the 2001 PBA ROY by averaging 13.77 PPG and 4.87 RPG.

His monicker “The Spark”, he gave BGK a run and gun type of play in which lead his team to a back to back title in 2004.

Some says that he had several chances of winning the MVP, not only for the media votes, and some injuries in which he missed some games in a single conference.

Accomplishments:

This Fil-Tongan was one of the direct hire Fil-Ams during the 1999 Off-season. He led the Mobiline to a winning streak during the 1999 AFC, only to lose to Ginebra by a buzzer beater shot by Bal David.

Faced some issues about his citizenship, in 2004 he was suspended in the league indefinitely by Commissioner then, Noli Eala.

He was the first Fil-Am to win the MVP honors in 2003 since Ricardo Brown of the Great Taste in 1985.

He was also a regular member of our National Team.
